If you asked me what my favorite comic right now is (besides the Absolute Comics) I would definitely say its Superman by Joshua Williamson, Dan Mora, Eddy Barrows and so many other incredible artist.

I’m going to be honest, when Joshua Williamson started his run on the main title I refused to read it. I was enamored and in love with the Action Comics run going on at the same time by Phillip Kennedy Johnson and Rafa Sandoval. I loved the PKJ Action Comics run, I looked forward to it every month at a time I was just dipping my toes back into mainline comics.

I remember thinking that I had my main Superman comic, I didn’t need anything else. Boy was I wrong.

When PKJ’s run finally came to an end, I was itching for more Superman content, so I caved and decided to catch up on Joshua Williamson’s run and I fell head over heels.

Williamson has been at DC comics for around a decade now and I think this is his strongest writing he’s ever done. Williamson absolutely gets every single member of the supporting cast. Every month he provides a solid Superman story while also checking in and exploring our favorite cast of Lois, Perry White, even touching down on Jimmy Olson’s love life.

I was a big fan of everything I had read. Williamson was also joined by a consistently top tier roster of artists, including the amazing Jamal Campbell and Glen Melnikov.  We got to the first event of the title “House of Brainiac” and I was loving every minute of it. But then something happened, DC launched their All In line wide initiative and my opinion of the title changed.

Joshua Williamson was suddenly joined by my all time favorite artist Dan Mora. Dan Mora had been penciling my other favorite comic: Batman/Superman: World’s Finest, written by Mark Waid, and Shazam by Mark Waid, and most recently the Absolute Power event by Mark Waid.

Hot off the heels of Absolute Power and Dan Mora doesn’t miss a beat. His art immediately provides us with a fresh take on the title and makes it feel new and fresh without a complete relaunch. Every page is vibrant and excellent, it feels like the Superman title ascends into being the gold status that the Superman title should be.

You would think that fresh art would be enough but its not. Joshua Williamson stays true to the DC All In initiative and gives us my favorite story the title has had since launch with a story called “The Many Deaths of Doomsday”.

We jump into this with Lois suddenly being Superwoman (see Absolute Power for insight how!), and suddenly the Lois and Clark dynamic is cranked to 11. We have seen a lot of Lois and Clark dynamics over the last few decades but here Williamson elevates it by putting their relationship on a superhero scale. Lois is trying to balance being Editor and Chief of the Daily Planet while also learning what it means to be like Superman, who she has been a somewhat outsider of for the last few decades. Its a truly fun dynamic that I honestly couldn’t have predicted this run touching on.

But because Williamson is Williamson, it gets even better. One of the main focuses of this story is this idea of Superman living until the end of time itself, locked in a never ending battle against the time trapper. Our current day Clark is given a glimpse of this and is shaken by the idea that he will outlive all of his loved ones, and perhaps time itself.

There’s a few other twists and turns in this story that I won’t spoil here, but this honestly feels like a story decades in the making. Here Williamson is tightly weaving decades of continuity in a story that feels impactful as well as the natural evolution for a lot of effected characters.

The art is top notch, the writing is top notch. This is THE DC Comics title you should be pulling. Especially with the recent announcement that Williamson is going to be following up on some story threads from last years DC All In Special #1. I’m at the edge of my seat with this book, and I can’t wait to see where the team takes us next.

With the Superman movie hype approaching critical mass: this is THE Superman comic you should be reading right now.
